John W. Schaum Piano Course: Pre-A : The Green Book

It begins with one page of very simple letter pieces which introduce the idea of up and down and steps and skips. Next notes are introduced from middle C outward. I recommend using correction fluid or tape to cover the finger numbers, especially with the younger students. This allows them to play the pieces using other finger combinations, and it eliminates reliance on the numbers rather than observing note placement and direction.

Once the student has strong finger arches some have this almost immediately , doing some pieces with careful attention to the indicated fingering will help develop the student's ability to follow fingerings when needed. The pieces are short and often a bit humorous.

I learned from this book 60 years ago!!! I have been, and continue to be, a professional pianist, entertainer, and private piano teacher- for my entire adult life. This may seem like a tedious book to some, but it REALLY ingrains the study of note recognition, note playing, learning about counts and rhythms, time and clef signatures, and finger placements in the brain. I am teaching with this for the first time coupled with Teaching Little Fingers to Play with a boy for whom none of my favourite primer books was working.

They work well together, and since there are fewer fingering marks, I often use it after or along with a similar lesson in the Thompson book.

I am following the suggestion of a colleague who uses these two books together regularly to build good reading skills. I'm not big on the middle C approach as a rule, so no five stars, but I think it's a great fit for certain students. I think that, like math, there is no one primer book that is perfect for every beginner regardless of a teacher's abilities and since I am very big on getting kids to read music well I always look for something that helps each student succeed.

Good young beginner Piano Book. I use Schaum for younger students yrs old. Both are good and have their own advantages. Make a wish list for gifts, suggest standard repertoire, let students know which books to buy, boast about pieces you've mastered: Music Lists are as unique as the musician!

Easily share your music lists with friends, students, and the world. My student learned to read music much Unless the teacher is lazy, they are going to stress both. As a teacher, I have been using Schaum's Green Book for over 20 years. I prefer it to the primer levels in other methods because it starts with note reading immediately and the pieces are of very high quality.

The revision with color pictures was a huge success, although I do prefer the old version of "Eskimo Boy" with the chromatic notes. I just write them into the score and students adjust fine. Pretty Polly is the toughest to teach because of the crossed thumbs. Leave it out if you have to.

I teach all ages as beginners. This book is not too fast and not to repetative so it is great for all ages. I reccommend it to any piano teacher for their students. I actually switched from another book to this one. I started using this method approximately three years ago after trying Alfred, Bastien, and other series.

This has been the best by far! It moves along at a comfortable pace that students seem to really enjoy. I can see why this book has been around so long. Young children benefit from this great method of learning piano. It is the same one that I learned with as a young child, and I am finding it easy to teach my niece using John W.
